‘Rites of Passage: Embracing Change in Ourselves’* supports a young person’s journey to maturity by mining ancient wisdom and shared cultural heritage to offer practical methodologies for the ‘path of life’. It seeks to empower a generation of community leaders by equipping youth workers with creative tools for rigorous and practical leadership. We will consider selfhood by addressing contemporary issues – a lack of guidance from elders, a growing pessimism about adult life, the struggle to find purpose at a time of crisis and, for many, an absent spiritual framework.
You will study: ® Ethnographic principles and the history of ritual ® Biography ® Joseph Campbell’s ‘Hero’s Journey’ and Carl Jung’s archetypes ® Initiation rites for adolescence ® Active listening and the practice of empathy ® Poetry for personal expression
The course will use non-formal education methods including presentations, group work, sharing and games. You will be stimulated by active personal participation, project design, development and delivery. You will be furnished with a toolkit and will be asked to create dissemination projects in your home communities.
