European Space Camp is an annual week-long summer camp held at the Andøya Space Center in Northern Norway. The next camp is held from August 1st to 8th 2021. ESC gives the opportunity to 24 young adults to spend six days running different aspects of a real rocket campaign including the launch itself. Scattered throughout the week are a number of lectures from some of Europe’s top scientists and engineers on topics varying from rocket physics to the northern lights.

The week is not purely group work and lectures, plenty social activities are organised too. There is a hike up the mountain to the ALOMAR research station, swimming under the midnight sun followed by a trip to the sauna, as well as volleyball and a GPS challenge, all in the stunning surroundings of the Andøya Space Centre. All ESC participants stay at the Space Center’s hotel in a double room, shared with another participant. All rooms come equipped with an en suite bathroom and sheets and towels are provided, as well as wifi. The Space Center’s cafeteria caters for all of the meals at camp, and all moderate dietary restrictions are catered for.

The Space Center also comprises an auditorium, smaller meeting rooms and working rooms equipped with computers. In addition, there is a sauna and a games room complete with a pool table and table tennis table.

European Space Camp lasts one week at the Andøya Rocket Range in Norway, the northernmost launch facility in the world.

The scientific part of the camp is divided between lectures and group work. Some of the best lecturers from across Europe lecture on topics as diverse as Rocket Physics, the work of CERN and the Northern Lights. Group work enables participants to spend a week in the life of a scientist and tackle a problem relating to the rocket launch at the end of the week. There are five groups in total: Rocket System Design, Experimental Instrumentation, Payload, Rocket Telemetry and Rocket Physics. The highlight of the week is of course the rocket launch, which takes place near the end of the week, with just enough time to analyse the results of the launch.

An important part of Space Camp is getting to know the other participants and there will be a series of social activities organised as a result. There will be the opportunity to hike up a mountain, go on a sea safari, to play volleyball in the spectacular surroundings of the Andøya Rocket Range and to swim under the midnight sun followed by a trip to the sauna!

Requirements

All applicants eligible for a seat must be:

• 17-20 Years old - Born between January 1st 2002 and December 31st 2005.
• Interested in Science - A well documented passion for science is essential for a good application.
• Fluent in English - The entire camp is conducted in English.

Is European Space Camp only open to European applicants?

No, European Space Camp is open to all students regardless of their location. So far, in addition to participants from all over Europe, we have had participants from Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, the Philippines and the USA.

Cost/funding for participants

To be accepted as a participant for ESC 2022 you must receive a scholarship. Through the application form on our webpage you can apply for the ESC seat (International) and the two ESA seats (International).

European Space Camp will cover all accommodation and meals during the week at Andøya Rocket Range, as well as transportation from Andenes Airport to the Rocket Range.
